The Joshua Tree

With The Joshua Tree, U2 hit the big-time. It won the Grammy for Album of the Year and stuck at #1 in the charts for quite awhile. Though lyrically angst-filled, the sound was moderate enough to be enjoyed by a wide audience, only some of whom grasped the Christian subtext.

1984

Essential '80s hard rock, though perhaps in the guilty pleasure category for those of us who have come to roll our eyes at some of David Lee Roth's "I'm a sexual dynamo" lyrics. Regardless, 1984 is a hard-charging album with some incredible Eddie Van Halen guitar work. I can also tell you from personal experience that it makes a great workout tape.

Who's Next

If not the greatest classic rock album of all time, certainly in the running.

90125

A wonderous album, and not just because "Owner of Lonely Heart" is one of the best rock songs ever. Guitar-driven yet musically diverse, 90125 also benefits from Trevor Horn's stellar production. Excellent.

Big Generator

This is the album that served Dave and I well enough to get us through two years of college. We'd put on a tape of Big Generator (or sometimes 90125), chat for bit, and drift off to sleep. I have very fond memories associated with this album.

It's a strange work, though. Not as cohesive as 90125, it almost plays out as a collection of rareties, singles or B-sides. In part, that's because it took the band five years to create. Nonetheless, it's a brilliant collection of songs, and at least one (Shoot High, Aim Low) is among the progressive rock all-time greats.
