Duran Duran (The Wedding Album)

If ever there were a polarizing band, Rush is it. Geddy Lee's unusual voice and Neil Peart's pretentious lyrics have turned off their share of rock fans. Still, for those of us who have acclimated ourselves to Lee's warblings, Rush is one of the more intelligent rock bands out there. While we might agree that Peart has over reached lyrically on occasion, we also find him one of the most intelligent voices in rock music, and a lyricist capable of dealing with deep philosophical concepts utterly beyond most writers. Indeed, side one of 2112 is a brilliant anti-communist allegory. Side two holds five classic Rush songs. Concept albums from the '70s rarely got any better than this.

Graceland

Paul Simon's best post-Simon & Garfunkel album by a wide margin. Combining the music and rhythms of South Africa with his own pithy lyrics, Simon achieved a stunning tribute to world music.

Seal (1st album)

Trevor Horn's production is superb, but what really catapults this album into the realm of greatness is Seal's ability as an artist. The depth of personality, spirituality, and emotion that comes through in the work is amazing, particularly since this is a dance album.

Seal (2nd album)

Since it won the Grammy for Song of the Year and received massive air-play to boot, most people have probably heard "Kiss From a Rose." That superlative cut is but one part of a captivating album to which I simply do not grow tired of listening. Producer Trevor Horn has worked his magic well, and the results are beyond impressive. Is it hip-hop? Is it rock? Is it electronica? I'd probably say, "yes" to all three, but however you decide to classify it, you'll be sure to label it "excellent" at the same time.
