Nevermind

Nevermind exploded on the scene and redefined rock, almost single-handedly inventing the sub-genre known as "grunge." Regardless of witty lyrics that are more often than not huge downers, this is a landmark album which is still being copied.

Duran Duran (The Wedding Album)

For a debut album, Ten is right up there with the all-time great ones. Second only to Nirvana as exponents of the "Seattle Sound," the release of Pearl Jam's Ten actually preceded Nirvana's Nevermind by about a month. Both are essential listening for anyone who wants to know what the hell happened to rock music in the '90s.

[I've violated my own rules to recommend this album since I don't technically own it. Nonetheless, I've heard every song on it dozens of times, and borrowed the CD from my brother Bret for months at a time.]

Dark Side of the Moon

A musical treatise on time, madness, wealth, and the futility of life. Lyricist Roger Waters always has lots to say, but he's rarely said it better (or more concisely). This is psychedelic, mood-making music which I personally find terribly depressing, but which I also acknowledge as utter genius. Dark Side also provides an excellent introduction to the band for those looking for a first Pink Floyd album.
