Much Ado About Nothing

Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson shine in this marvelous adaptation of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. Filmed in glorious Tuscany, this picture is marvelous to behold and features a strong ensemble including Denzel Washington, Michael Keaton, and Brian Blessed. The notable exception is Keanu Reeves, whose voice grates exceedingly and who clearly is not up to the challenge of Shakespearean acting or dialogue.

Be that as it may, Branagh has again made Shakespeare accessible in a grand, glorious style, and though the plot is indeed much ado about nothing, it's still enough fun for repeated viewing.

The Mac is Not a Typewriter

This A&E miniseries is utterly captivating. A Victorian-era period piece, it succeeds on every level. The acting is outstanding, the costuming superb, and the script magnificent. It's every bit as good as Jane Austen's novel, and it's a rare day when I'm willing to concede that sort of thing about any film.

The only words of warning I'll give are that this is a complex six-hour miniseries, and you best be prepared to dedicate six straight hours to it, because it's painfully hard to stop watching after you've started. Erin and I have seen it literally dozens of times.

[Despite the greatness of this miniseries, the DVD is severely washed out and is among the worst video to DVD transfers I've ever seen. It's watchable, but this production deserved a lot better.]

The Road Less Traveled

One of my all-time favorites, Shawshank is a violent prison story about the power of hope. A brilliantly well-made picture, the character-driven Shawshank stars Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. The haunting Thomas Newman soundtrack alone is worth the price of the video.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

The greatest of all Bill Murray's comedies, Groundhog Day merits that distinction simply by being the most meaningful. The numerous humorous riffs are such that one can appreciate this film as a straight comedy, but if one examines the zen-like subtext about the nature of existence, it's not difficult to see that for a romantic comedy this is a film of unsurpassed depth.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families

In my humble opinion, the greatest science fiction film ever made.
