About a year or so after Steve Jobs returned to bring Apple back into the spotlight, the icons were deemed a little too dated and were removed. No argument from me, though I think there was a nice touch of whimsy about them.
For those who've not visited Apple HQ, the building you see here as the backdrop to the icons is one of several along the circular drive called "Infinite Loop." I've attended several seminars at Apple, and the monthly meetings of BMUG South (Berkeley Macintosh Users Group) are held in the auditorium. There's also a neat retail store with lots of Mac software and a great selection of Apple-branded clothing.
