March 1991, somewhere in Mexico—My friend Suzanne and I spent a god-awful night in a two-seat Geo Metro convertible at this truck stop in front of "Restaurant Yolis." We wouldn't have stayed here except our previous parking spot turned out to be the unlit center of an eight-way dirt road intersection. Hey, it's hard to see things at night. Anyway, after I explained to the police in my halting Spanish that I was just a young college gringo idiot, they led us here so that we could spend the night in relative safety. The racket from the restaurant and the road was unbearable, but I finally got to sleep around 4 AM. This was our view when morning came.
