Info and links on my varied musical interests.

 October 2, 2001

I love music. I grew up on classic rock like Led Zeppelin, The Who, Pink Floyd, and Yes, but I'm also partial to Seal, Duran Duran, Enya, Sting and so on. In short, there's a lot of great stuff out there, and I dig listening to most all of it. What follows are some web sites where you can get more details on some of my favorites.

In addition, I've provided links to some sites I've found helpful in building my home recording studio. If you're looking to do something similar, there's lots of good information here.

 Influences

Future Love Paradise
Seal's work is an appealing blend of enigmatic spirituality, catchy rhythms, and stellar production. Working with producer Trevor Horn (my favorite music producer), Seal has turned out one brilliant album after another.

Duran Duran
Duran Duran gets my vote for one of the best bands of the last 20 years. Not only did they re-define the music industry with their ground-breaking work on MTV, though also added a sorely missing touch of style (also seen, I think, with Genesis) to the proceedings. Dismissed for a while as mere '80s heartthrobs, their best work has actually come in the last few years. Their Duran Duran (aka the wedding album) is a mature, confident, brilliant album by any standard.

Laura Love
The best artist you've probably never heard of. Laura combines African rhythms with Irish melodies and comes up with stuff that's all her own.

Jars of Clay
These guys are a relatively new alternative/Christian band. Their sophomore effort, Much Afraid, is superb, and one of the best albums I've come across in the last year.

Notes From the Edge
More information on the progressive rock band Yes than you can shake a stick at.

Pink Floyd: Set the Controls
Probably the most comprehensive Floyd site on the net. Personally, I don't think they ever topped Dark Side of the Moon, but it wasn't for lack of trying, and lots of the material is excellent.

Buckeye's Led Zeppelin Page
'70s rock 'n' roll didn't get any better than Led Zeppelin, and it's virtually impossible to find a rock band today that wasn't influenced one way or another by the work Zeppelin produced. (Of course Zeppelin lifted a lot of their stuff from earlier-era blues masters.) None of my stuff sounds much like the mighty Zep, but I listened to hours of Zep in high school, so something must have seeped through.

 Music Technology

XP-80
The unofficial home page for the Roland XP-80, my main axe for the album.

Kraft Music
One of the best, lowest-priced music equipment retailers on the net. I bought my XP-80, KC-500, and Shure SM 58 from these guys.

MOTU
Mark of the Unicorn's Digital Performer is sweet audio recording software. Their 24i hard disk recording system is awesome, too.
