The number 42 has been my favorite since I was a child. Why I cannot explain. Other than Douglas Adams' excellent books, I don't recall an event in my life which would have predisposed me toward the number; I didn't read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy until I was in my teens. But 42 moves with me through life, through space and time, unvarying in its power to remind me, paradoxically, that some things—like preferences from childhood—can remain constant.
