All Along [5:24 / 6.1 MB MP3]
A shot rang out and the race had begun
Moving blindly about on sprawling spawning run
I plied my tricks, passing obstacles one by one
You have to be quick to get what you want
At the finish line, when the race is run
Will you be waiting there, or were you with me all along?
It's easy to trip over words designed to allure
But I'd swear my wings were clipped
There must have been someone there.
And then I slipped into the Whole of Love
Coming to grips was the hardest thing I've ever done
At the finish line, when the race is run
Will you be waiting there, or were you with me all along?
If my life is a trip, parts were plotted by someone
And I'm destined to live guided from above
I think it's a myth that I've been lucky in love
I've just been given a gift, and seen Grace for what it was.
At the finish line, when the race is run,
Will you be waiting there, or were you with me all along?
NOTES
Not an album track, but a spur-of-the-moment ballad that turned out better than expected. Autobiographical. A song whose chorus should probably begin, "Dear God" and whose answer is, I suspect, "both."
