Mexican Heavens

March, 1991, near Playa de Los Dorados, MexicoIncredible sunsets like this one helped make my senior year Spring Break trip to Mexico with my friend Suzanne, well, incredible. We spent about a week driving around the eastern side of the Gulf of California in a rented Geo Metro convertible which, technically, never should have left its home state of Arizona. Oops. (Kids, don't try this at home.)

We saw evidence of Mexico's well-earned reputation for horrid roads almost everywhere we went. Some of the potholes, had I hit them, would have swallowed us whole. And I appreciated the friendly and plentiful white cross roadside reminders that somebody has died here. You'd think that alone would encourage traffic safety and roadway modernization, but you'd be wrong.

This particular night, Sue and I had followed a map into a little fishing village. The map clearly indicated overnight accommodations were available, but when we arrived at dusk, it was obvious that there was no place to stay. We ended up pulling off the road about 5 miles out of town and hunkering down for the night in the thoroughly uncomfortable Metro. We found our overnight spot about 5 minutes before this shot was taken.
